What ganzhi notation records

Gan zhi, also written ganzhi, means a paired Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. The ten stems and twelve branches are two ordered cycles. Traditional pairing keeps the same yin-yang polarity, so the combinations run through sixty positions before the first pairing returns. An animal is attached to each branch as a familiar zodiac coordinate, but the animal is not the whole date label.

A record that names bing wu, for example, gives a stem-branch pair. Bing is the third Heavenly Stem and wu is the seventh Earthly Branch; together they are position 43 in the sixty-position cycle and are commonly glossed as Fire Horse. That gloss is useful for orientation, but it does not replace the original cyclical notation or prove anything about a person's character.

The same system can mark four time layers

  • Read the heading or surrounding text before deciding what a ganzhi pair refers to:
  • - A year pair labels a cyclical year and is the layer most readers call a zodiac year.
  • - A month pair belongs to a traditional calendrical month system and is not simply the number of a modern calendar month.
  • - A day pair identifies a position in the repeating day cycle.
  • - An hour pair identifies a traditional double-hour
  • the branch can be converted to an animal, but the complete hour pillar also needs its stem.

This is why a single animal in a record can be misleading. The same branch vocabulary appears in year, month, day, and hour notation. A careful transcription preserves the stem, branch, punctuation, era name, place, and surrounding phrase instead of replacing a pair with an animal name.

A practical method for reading a dated source

  • Use this sequence when working with an inscription, almanac, genealogy, letter, or catalog record:
  • 1. Photograph or transcribe the original notation and record the edition, collection, page, and stated calendar.
  • 2. Identify whether the pair marks a year, month, day, hour, reign-year reference, or a date in a named event.
  • 3. Check the relevant calendar conversion table, time zone, and historical calendar rule
  • do not use a generic modern lookup for an old record.
  • 4. Compare the result with an independent source, such as an institutional calendar table or a scholarly calendrical reference.
  • 5. Report the original pair, the proposed modern date, the convention used, and any unresolved alternative.

For a recent year, a published conversion table may make the lookup straightforward. For a historical record, the difficult part is often not the sixty-position arithmetic. It is deciding which calendar, local time, era system, and year boundary the record assumes. A date copied from a later catalog may also reflect an editor's conversion rather than the wording of the original object.

Why year boundaries need a note

A popular Chinese calendar presentation usually changes the zodiac year at Lunar New Year. Some Bazi practitioners instead use Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring solar term, as the year boundary. These are different conventions, and a date in January or February can receive different year labels under them. A responsible historical note names the convention rather than presenting one boundary as universal.

Time can matter as well. A record near midnight, near the start of a zi hour, or close to a solar-term transition should retain its local place and clock assumptions. How to use the animal label responsibly

The animal is a useful index for a calendar cycle, a teaching aid, or a cultural motif. It is not a substitute for the stem, branch, date layer, or source context. It also is not a complete Bazi reading. Bazi uses four pillars, and each pillar has a stem and branch; interpretation depends on the full chart and on the chosen school.

A good conversion preserves more information than it replaces: keep the original ganzhi pair, state the calendar convention, and show how the modern date was obtained.

  • For a research notebook, record:
  • - Source and object or document identifier
  • - Exact ganzhi characters as transcribed, with ASCII pinyin if needed
  • - Claimed layer: year, month, day, or hour
  • - Calendar, place, time, and year-boundary assumptions
  • - Conversion table or scholarly reference consulted, named without publishing a third-party link
  • - Result, confidence level, and competing readings
  • - Whether the animal is being used as a calendar index, a cultural symbol, or an interpretive claim
